The Circle of the Way

A Concise History of Zen from the Buddha to the Modern World

New Paperback Illustrated

Postscript summary

Noting that the history of Buddhism is subtly but inextricably woven into its living, collaborative practice, and that Zen is just one stream of that collective effort, Barbara O'Brien charts a path between traditional lore and modern scholarship to trace the development of the doctrine and its rituals as a tradition across cultures and centuries.
