The British

The National Character Observed

PONT
One of Punch magazine's most celebrated cartoonists, Graham Laidler, or 'Pont', completed some 400 cartoons for the magazine before his untimely death in 1940. He published several collections of cartoons, but The British Character (1938) was the most successful – and most influential. This book presents its comedic survey of British foibles such as 'The Importance of Tea', along with selections from Pont's At Home and Popular Misconceptions series (1939) and a number of miscellaneous cartoons.
