Sydney Camm

Hurricane and Harrier Designer: Saviour of Britain

John Sweetman
The Hawker Hurricane for which Sydney Camm (1893–1966) is best remembered was one of 52 aircraft he designed, from wooden biplanes to jet fighters. This biography follows his progress from a modest upbringing in Windsor, and apprenticeship at the Martin Handasyde Aviation Company, to becoming Britain’s foremost aeronautical engineer, whose crucial contribution to the Battle of Britain was followed in the 1960s by his crowning achievement, the Harrier vertical take-off jump jet.
