Domenico Caracciolo (1715–1789), Viceroy of Sicily, initially served as a judge but came to despise lawyers and courts, abandoning law in 1752 to embark on a distinguished diplomatic career in London, Turin and Paris. This portrait of Caracciolo draws on his voluminous correspondence to give a view of European diplomatic culture and the struggle against feudal rule in the Two Sicilies.
