When he died in 1551, Henry Tooley, the richest merchant in Ipswich, left most of his wealth to the poor of the town. Set up by his executors, the Tooley Foundation maintained almshouses and the success of this private charity led to the opening of a municipal poorhouse, Christ’s Hospital. The documents transcribed here, with introductions, notes and appendices, are derived from those two institutions, plus a Register of the Poor 1569–83, Outdoor and Plague Relief assessments, and a descriptive Census of the Poor 1597. Off-mint and musty due to age.
