London Calling

Britain, the BBC World Service and the Cold War

Alban Webb

During the Second World War, BBC radio expanded from one English-language broadcast to over 40 foreign-language ‘External Services’ and with the beginning of the Cold War that wide coverage became strategically important, making possible direct engagement with hearts and minds behind the Iron Curtain. This study examines the role of the World Service in relation to British diplomatic and foreign policy objectives, and also assesses its impact on listeners in the Eastern Bloc.
