Nicknamed ‘Hawkeye’ for his acute vision, Giora Even-Epstein was born on a kibbutz in 1938 to Polish parents. He recalls the birth of Israel, his struggle to become a pilot despite a heart condition, and how, after serving as a paratrooper, he flew F16s and Mirage IIIs in the 1967 Six Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War, shooting down 17 enemy aircraft and being promoted to Major General.
