Eynsham Cartulary

Vol. I

Ed. HE Salter
New Hardback Illustrated

Postscript summary

The Benedictine Abbey of Eynsham was first founded by Aethelmar the Ealderman in 1005 but abandoned at the Norman Conquest. At some point before 1086, it was founded for the second time by the bishop of Lincoln and recorded in Domesday as holding one church and thirteen houses, of which eight were in ruins. The earliest cartulary dates from around 1196 and continues to the late 14th century. It is transcribed here with a general introduction, footnotes and appendices on the Chesney family, Smoke-farthings, and visitations. No jacket. Slightly off-mint. American cut with some uncut pages.
