The Digby Poems
A New Edition of the Lyrics
Ed. Helen BarrPostscript summary
The 24 short lyrics known as the Digby Poems date from the early 15th century and represent a challenge to the theory that vernacular religious writing was stifled by the Church at that time. In this freshly transcribed and extensively annotated edition, Helen Barr provides new evidence for the poems’ provenance and authorship and shows their political significance and their place in the tradition of devotional writing.
