Cursed Legacy

The Tragic Life of Klaus Mann

Frederic Spotts
Klaus Mann (1906–49) was among the first German authors to write against the Nazi regime; he was exiled in 1933 and his books, notably his novel Mephisto (1936), were banned. Frederic Spotts’s biography describes Mann as ‘six times jinxed’ – as the son of the celebrated Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, as a homeless exile, homosexual and drug addict, a writer unable to publish in his native tongue and a man fascinated by death.
