Britain's Last Mechanical Signalling

Salute to the Semaphore

Gareth David
Even though coloured light signals were first introduced in the 1920s, the lever-operated semaphore type have survived in parts of the network to the present day. This photographic tour seeks out these last routes and their accompanying signal boxes. Notable examples include the ‘Poacher Line’ from Grantham to Skegness, which boasts a dozen signal boxes, seven of which control mechanical signals.
