Bandstands

Pavilions for Music, Leisure and Entertainment

Paul Rabbitts
In the early 19th-century parks movement, the reformers’ aim to promote ‘a better use of Sundays’ and ‘rational recreation’ as an alternative to brutish entertainments inspired the creation of bandstands. As well as their history, design, the music played and the role of the iron foundries, this illustrated study explores the social impact of bandstands, from early ‘orchestras’, through decline in the mid-20th century, to revival in the 1990s.
