A True Story of Tragedy in the Icy Atlantic and the One Who Lived to Tell About It

Brian Murphy , Toula Vlahou
New Hardback Illustrated

Postscript summary

In February 1856, en route from Liverpool to New York, the John Rutledge struck an iceberg and sank. Of its hundred passengers – mostly Irish emigrants – just 13 survived in a lifeboat. After nine days adrift, only the crewman Thomas Nye was left. Using newspaper reports, ships’ logs, diaries and Nye’s own testimony, this account offers a dramatic, day-by-day description of the tragedy.
