In 1966 Tom Phillips bought a copy of the novel A Human Document by long-forgotten author WH Mallock, thus beginning a five-decade art project. Using a combination of painting, collage and cut-up techniques he edited each page to produce an entirely new ‘dispersed narrative’, in what Brian Eno has called ‘one of the most original, fascinating and lovely books of all time’. It appears here in its final (2016) version.
