The Selden Map of China

A New Understanding of the Ming Dynasty

Hongping Annie Nie

Donated to the Bodleian Library by John Selden (1584–1654), an ancient map languished in storage for centuries before its significance was recognized in 2008. Unlike other Chinese maps of the period, it covers countries beyond China and depicts seafaring trade routes and navigational information that cast new light on the history of China – previously thought to be strictly isolated and conservative during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
