In 1915 a young second lieutenant, Douglas Gillespie, wrote to his former headmaster that, when peace came, there should be a commemorative ‘Via Sacra’ from the Swiss border to the English Channel. Soon afterwards, he was killed. A century later Anthony Seldon discovered the letter and, mourning the death of his wife, set out to walk the 1,000-kilometre route, through the battlefields of Verdun, Picardy, the Somme and Ypres.
