Between 1530 and 1533, Robert Joseph (c1500–1569) wrote 170 letters, most of them at his monastery Evesham between two periods of study at Gloucester College, Oxford. After a substantial introduction, this volume presents the letters, including some verses, in the original Latin. ‘Everyone is familiar with the great humanists like Erasmus and More; here we can see what their humble followers and imitators, the rank and file of the humanists, were like’ – the editors.
