The Dapuri Drawings

Alexander Gibson and The Bombay Botanic Gardens

HJ Noltie

The Dapuri Drawings formed the basis for a series of watercolours created by a Portuguese-Indian artist in the mid 19th century for East India Company surgeon Alexander Gibson. They depict the variety of plants that could be seen in the botanic gardens Gibson oversaw and were originally published in his Bombay Flora. In addition to colour reproductions of the 170 drawings, which show a range of species native to India as well as those imported from Argentina and Australia, and notes on the plants’ form and origin, this large-format volume presents a brief history of Dapuri and explores Gibson’s achievements as a botanist and forester.
