Photographer Phil Stern (known as Snapdragon and later to become a Hollywood portraitist) was an elite soldier in the First Battalion and took numerous images during the North African and Italian campaigns. Published here for the first time, they are supplemented by commentaries and a memoir written shortly after the war.
