Sermons Preached on Various Occasions
Postscript summary
The first eight of these 15 sermons were preached in 1856–7 at the Catholic University of Ireland, where Newman was the first Rector. The remaining sermons were in response to ‘external circumstances’ including the restoration of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the Risorgimento in Italy and its repercussions on the papacy, and the deaths of Newman’s friends, Dr Weedall and James Hope Scott.
