The Photography Book
An A-Z of over 550 photographers, this volume spans the entire history of the medium - from Fox Talbot and Daguerre to reportage, fashion and advertising photographers working today - and includes historic images such as Mathew B Brady's portrait of General Sherman and Robert Capa's Death of a Loyalist Soldier from his coverage of the Spanish Civil War. Each photographer is represented by one of their finest images, and the editors provide commentary setting the photograph in context.
The Chinese Art Book
Examining Chinese art over several millennia, this unconventional volume presents reproductions or photographs of a vast range of artefacts and paintings, each one juxtaposed with another work on the facing page, and producing unexpected dialogues across time, culture and genre. Shitao's Riverbank of Peach Blossoms (c.1700), for example is paired with a 2006 installation, Sketch the Sketch Lesson by Qiu Xiaofei, but the volume includes sculptures, ceramics, calligraphy and photographs ranging in date from prehistory to the 21st century.
Snail, Where Are You?
The French illustrator Tomi Ungerer is a much-loved children's author. This classic from 1962, reissued by art publisher Phaidon, contains very few words but features a series of dazzlingly bright and inventive illustrations that all include, somewhere, the curled pattern of a snail's shell. Age 2+
Story of a Shoot
The story of the making of The Misfits (1961), the legendary film directed by John Huston and starring Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift, is told here in photographs taken on location by Magnum photographers who were there as part of the film's PR strategy. The 200 informal and often intimate shots of the stars and crew are accompanied by Serge Toubiana's essay and his interview with Arthur Miller, Monroe's husband at the time and the film's screenwriter.
