The Man Who Discovered Antarctica

Edward Bransfield Explained

Sheila Bransfield
Intrigued to find her surname applied to several locations in Antarctica, the author set about researching the life of her great-great-grandfather, Edward Bransfield. An Irish boy press-ganged into the navy, he rose through the ranks to become a ship’s master, and in 1820 – where Cook had reported no land – claimed the South Shetland Islands for Britain and charted part of the Antarctic mainland’s Trinity Peninsula.
