Prior to the First World War military uniforms were brightly coloured and often included gold or silver braid, large badges, fur headdresses with elaborate plumes or ornamented metal helmets. These uniforms also contained references to past glories, such as the dented buttons of the British Wiltshire Regiment reminding soldiers of how their regiment had used buttons to defend Carrickfergus Castle in 1760 when their ammunition ran out.
