From Muslim to Christian Granada

Inventing a City's Past in Early Modern Spain

A Katie Harris

A century after the conquest of Muslim Grenada, treasure hunters unearthed books and sacred relics, the ‘plomos’, that seemed to prove the city’s early Christian roots. The relics inspired devotion among the citizens but, despite being authenticated by the archbishop in 1600, they have continued to generate controversy. In this study, Harris examines how the people of Grenada created a new civic identity – as heirs of an ancient Christian heritage – based on these famous forgeries.
