Forgotten Englishman

Thomas Stephens and the Mission to the East

New Paperback Illustrated

Postscript summary

Having escaped the persecution of Catholics in England, Thomas Stephens (1549–1620) joined the Society of Jesus in Rome and in 1579 became the only Englishman to serve in the Jesuit Mission to the East. This study describes Stephens’ missionary ventures in England with Thomas Pounde, the journey to Goa with fellow Jesuits and his influential work in India, following a policy of cultural integration rather than imposing Christianity.
