Having graduated with an unusable degree in philosophy, I was working in a photographic studio when I met Robert Collie, owner of Collie Books and a blue Transit van, in 1980. Arranging photo shoots for Zanussi’s Appliance-of-Science and Heinz Baked Beans was never really me, so when a plan was hatched to sell Robert’s backlog of academic titles by mail order, I happily began writing what became Postscript Catalogue No 1. That was in London in 1987 and I carried on writing and copy-editing Postscript – although by the mid-1990s I needed help and other writers came on board – until around 2012. I’m still a Postscript writer, although now living in a Dartmoor village and concentrating – as I was all those years ago – on the academic books.
