I read this book a few months ago and quite frankly couldn’t put it down! It is an incredible account of true-life events, and is a story of true love and devotion, and the unbreakable spirit of a man who kept hope alive under the most atrocious circumstances – the holocaust. It is surprisingly uplifting!
As a tattooist of the infamous numbers etched into the arms of men, women, and children, Lale became well known by prisoners and guards at the notorious death camp at Auschwitz. It is how he met the love of his life, Gita, and his love for her gave him the much-needed strength to survive and endure the most brutal circumstances. He used his position to gain trust and garner favour with guards and personnel and used his initiative, intuition, kindness, and nous to keep himself and many of his fellow campmates alive.
It is an incredibly inspiring story about the strength of humanity, amidst one of the most inhumane episodes in history. I was truly touched by this love story, and the selfless courage Lale consistently demonstrated, in risking his own safety, to help others survive and endure the worst of times.
An unput-downable read which I highly recommend.
