Flying Past

A History of Sheppey Aviation

David T Hughes
New Paperback Illustrated

Postscript summary

When Wilbur Wright arrived in Europe in 1908 and offered demonstrations and flights in a Kitty Hawk, the Short brothers – who had been working on improving hot air balloons – were so enthused they obtained a license to manufacture six of Wright’s machines. The venture required them to find new premises and, together with the Aero Club, they leased 400 acres on the Isle of Sheppey. Telling its story largely through archive photographs, this volume traces the site’s contribution to aviation history, concluding with its fate after the RAF’s 1946 withdrawal. Slightly off-mint.
