The fourth novel in Benson's much-loved series is the first in which the indomitable Lucia meets the formidable Elizabeth Mapp. Lucia has moved to Tilling for the summer, lunching and holding musical soirees; but Miss Mapp has no intention of being socially outmanoeuvred by the newcomer.

Walpole's 'Gothic story' was originally published in 1764, when it purported to be a translation of a medieval Italian text.
Comprising ten stories found by the Head Waiter in luggage left behind in his hotel, this was originally the 1862 Christmas issue of Dickens's All the Year Round.
