The Castle of Otranto
When Conrad, heir to Otranto, dies on his wedding day, his father vows to marry the bride himself. Horrified, young Isabella must escape from the old prince and his gloomy castle. Walpole's 'Gothic story' was originally published in 1764, when it purported to be a translation of a medieval Italian text.
Comprising ten stories found by the Head Waiter in luggage left behind in his hotel, this was originally the 1862 Christmas issue of Dickens's All the Year Round. Four of the stories are by Dickens himself; others are by John Oxenford, Charles Allston Collins, Arthur Locker and Julia Cecilia Stretton. Foreword by Philippa Stockley.
