Charles Booth’s London Poverty Maps

Using interviews and statistics gathered between 1886 and 1903, Charles Booth pieced together a survey revealing that just over a third of Londoners were living in abject poverty; the findings were depicted on colour-coded maps that identified the status of each street’s inhabitants, from ‘vicious, semi-criminal’ to ‘wealthy’. This large-format volume presents the maps, with extracts from the notebooks of the original researchers, introductions to the historical context and black and white photographs.
