Britain's Black Regiments

Fighting for Empire and Equality

New Paperback Illustrated

Postscript summary

In 1797 a slave ship arrived in Jamaica, but rather than being sold the men held onboard were formed into the first version of the West India Regiment. Barry Renfrew explains how the various all-black units were alternately relied on, deployed to danger zones, and abused by the British Army from the Napoleonic period through to the Second World War.
