Volume 2: The Mosaics, the Inscriptions, the Pala d'Oro
This second volume on San Marco in Venice provides an illustrated iconographical record of the mosaics of the Basilica and their inscriptions, with plans, information, where known, on the mosaic artists and details of restorations. Two final chapters describe and illustrate in detail the magnificent floor of the Basilica and the Pala d'Oro, the gleaming golden altarpiece.
In the Apartments of Julius II and Leo X
Covering the history and arrangement of the rooms themselves as well as Raphael's decoration of them - his 'Stanze' - this volume looks in great detail at each fresco, including one of the most celebrated works of the Italian Renaissance, the School of Athens. There is also a chapter devoted to the so-called 'secret rooms' and their frescos by Fra Angelico and his workshop.
