Army Without Banners

New Paperback Illustrated

Postscript summary

Informed by her own experiences, Ann Stafford uses the alter ego Mildred Gibson to portray the day-to-day lives of those volunteering in the capital as the bombs fell. As Mildred faces the difficulty of fitting in with her new colleagues as an ambulance driver during the Blitz, and the pressure to ‘do her bit’, her narrative also sheds light on the ‘emotional economy’ of a time in which citizens were torn between boredom and fear.
