A Suitable Boy

New Paperback

Postscript summary

In the run up to India’s first general election following independence, Lata’s mother makes it clear that she is committed to finding ‘a suitable boy’ for her to marry. Lata would prefer to continue her English literature studies and nurture her relationship with Kabir, but religious differences put a brake on their plans and send Lata in a new direction. Over the course of 18 months Vikram Seth’s grand narrative traces Lata’s affairs of the heart, setting them against a society that is in the process of change.
