In 1998, the discovery of a group of folios of 19th century photographs led to the recognition of William, 2nd Earl of Craven (1809-1866) as a pioneer of British photography in the 1850s. Craven's hitherto unknown work was unique, covering an extraordinary range of experimentation in techniques and treatments of mood and subject matter that reveal a profound knowledge of painting. This first selection of the photographs is set within a narrative of Craven's life and times.
