An internationalist and an advocate for peace, Jean Jaures, the leader of the Socialist Party in France, was assassinated in July 1914. He was also a leading exponent of Marxist historiography and his groundbreaking History of the French Revolution, published in four volumes in 1901–4, is both a great work of literature and a landmark in the study of the Revolution. The present edition has been abridged and translated by Mitchell Abidor, with an introduction by Henry Heller.
