Using a case study of Devon's seaside resorts, this book traces the development of the seaside tourism industry throughout the 20th century. It begins by locating tourism within the wider leisure experience, addressing the seaside holiday as an historical, social and cultural phenomenon. It then explores key themes in the development of resorts, including local government advertising, facility provision and transport policies and the relationships between residents, local tourism operators and the concept of resort social tone.
