A Scot of humble origins, Dr Thomas Trotter became a mover and shaker of Georgian medicine. He joined the Royal Navy as an Assistant Surgeon, played a major part in improving the health of the Navy, participated in great naval events such as the Glorious First of June, and also wrote important works on scurvy and naval medicine. Although illuminating many aspects of 18th-century medical and naval history, the main theme of this study is Trotter's character and career.
