Opera, or the Undoing of Women
Sorry, this item is now out of stock.
Motivated both by love of opera and by a sense of betrayal, Clement presents a provocative study of women's roles in the plots of over 30 prominent operas. Through a close reading of libretti ranging from Don Giovanni to Madame Butterfly, and stripping away the elegant sets, gorgeous costumes and beautiful melodies, she shows how traditional opera perpetuates a social order which requires either the death or the domestication of the heroine. Translated by Betsy Wing. Slightly scruffy jackets.
