Napoleon and Betsy
Available in Stock
Imprisoned on the remote Atlantic island of St Helena, the fallen emperor Napoleon Bonaparte made an unlikely friend: the impudent, spirited 13-year-old daughter of a British naval officer. Over regular visits, Lucia Elizabeth Abell, known as Betsy, helped him to learn English, amused him with anecdotes and stories, and diverted him from his sombre thoughts. Her touching account of their friendship, published some 20 years later, is reprinted here with a biographical introduction and 32 pages of colour plates.
