Throughout 1648, Major John Sanderson, an officer in Lilburn's Parliamentary army, kept a diary of his activities. Its terse entries record the day-to-day problems of provisioning and quartering his troops, providing a unique insight into the practical details of the Civil War. This volume contains the diary in full, together with other writings by Sanderson (including his eye-witness account of the Battle of Preston), background information, brief biographies of the main protagonists, photographs, maps and plans.
