At 9am on 13 April 1933 deputy prosecutor Josef Hartinger was summoned to the new concentration camp at Dachau, where four prisoners had been shot, allegedly while trying to escape. In the weeks that followed, he was repeatedly called back, and with each corpse a terrifying new reality became clearer.
