Hearts Touched by Fire

At The Century Magazine in 1883, an editors' argument about which was the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War led them to commission a series of articles, written by Union and Confederate generals and presenting both sides of each major battle. The articles were published together in Battles and Leaders of the Civil War in 1887-8. This selection includes accounts of Vicksburg by Ulysses Grant, Gettysburg by Henry Hunt and 'the first fight of iron-clads' by John Taylor Wood.
