George Alexander Hill was born in Estonia and brought up speaking a variety of languages. He was in Canada when the First World War broke out and joined the Canadian infantry, soon being reassigned to intelligence work and later becoming one of Britain's key agents in Bolshevik Russia. His classic memoir, first published in 1932, includes encounters with a host of colourful characters including Sidney Reilly, Leon Trotsky and Arthur Ransome.
