In 1964, Mary Whitehouse launched the Clean Up TV Campaign to fight what she called the 'propaganda of disbelief, doubt and dirt' being broadcast by radio and television, politicians, pop stars and playwrights. The movement, with Whitehouse as figurehead, became the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association. Drawn from the Association's archive, this collection of letters reveals something of both the state of the nation's cultural life and of Mrs Whitehouse herself, its embattled moral guardian.
