Dr Andrew Duncan (1744–1828) was a remarkable figure during the Scottish Enlightenment whose influence continues to this day and whose name lives on in the Andrew Duncan Clinic, part of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. A champion of the poor, the mentally ill and public health, he founded Britain's first Chair of Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health in Edinburgh. The many aspects of his career and interests are covered in this volume of 15 essays, including a biographical overview by Chalmers.
