Louis Garneray joined the French Republican navy in 1796 at the age of thirteen, becoming a crew member on the privateer Robert Surcouf; captured in 1806, he spent eight years on the prison hulks in Portsmouth harbour. His autobiographical account records his travels and experiences, openly discussing the Revolutionary government's disappointing naval strategy and the brutality of a seaman privateer's life. Roland Wilson's translation includes notes based on French and British archives, and an introduction to Garneray's life and times. Off-mint.
