In the 1720s and 1730s, Jean-Baptiste Oudry established himself as France's pre-eminent painter of the hunt, animals, still life and landscape. This study, which accompanied an exhibition at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, focuses on eleven portraits of exotic animals - including the celebrated rhinoceros, Clara - from the royal menagerie at Versailles, painted between 1739 and 1752. Accompanying the portraits, six richly illustrated essays discuss Oudry's art and career, royal menageries and the restoration of Rhinoceros and Lion.
