With his On the Immortality of the Soul (1516), the Italian philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (1462-1525) provoked a controversy between the Thomists of the Catholic Church and the Averroists. The treatise was ordered to be burned in Venice. This 1910 study emphasizes Pomponazzi's study of Aristotle and his departure from Thomist orthodoxy, seeing the philosopher as, in the words of Douglas's editors, 'the last of the schoolmen ... the first of the Aristotelians'.
